The commodity flow survey aims at providing a picture of the commodity flow within Sweden and between Sweden and abroad.

The commodity flow is measured primarily in the form of the quantity of goods, commodity value and the mode of transport. The results can be found in the official statistics and are used by SIKA and the transport agencies as a basis for transport/traffic and infrastructure planning and in model contexts.

The extent of the studies

The study is carried out as a sample survey of workplaces in the mining and mineral extraction sector, manufacturing industry and wholesale trade. Certain industries provide information from administrative material, for instance, grain and sugar beet.

The study is being carried out at approximately three-year intervals. The most recent survey was carried out in 2004/2005. The commodity flow study has been carried out twice before in the form of sample surveys – spring 1996 and the fourth quarter of 1998 – and on a full scale in 2001.
