SIKA has, at the same time as the travel surveys (RES), carried out annual communications surveys (KOM). KOM surveys a broader spectrum of the individual’s activities during the measurement day than RES.

KOM is intended to obtain data as a basis for analyses of how the new communications technology is used in relation to physical travel. It is also intended to produce a basis for shedding light on access to use of data and telecommunications equipment in the Swedish population. Between 1996 and 2002 KOM has been carried out as development projects with relatively small samples. The first regular communications survey is KOM0304.

The extent of the studies
Of key importance in KOM is a survey via telephone interviews of the individuals’ contacts via media, Internet use and movements during a stipulated measurement day for each person. In addition, the study compiles information about the individuals’ experience of computers and the Internet and access to data and telecommunications equipment. Furthermore, the study, like RES, gathers information about gender, age, employment and holding of a driving licence and household resources in the form of, for instance, car ownership and housing.
